“I just NEED to get out of the day-to-day and stop working IN my business”
If I had a £1 for every time I heard a business owner say this I would donate millions to charity…
Many businesses start with an intrinsic link between the owner/founder and the day-to-day – this is often the nature of start-up. But, this fundamental link can be a growth inhibiter and to achieve potential, the day-to-day activities, decision making and problem solving needs to be decoupled (where appropriate) from the owner/founder and distributed to achieve shared psychological ownership.
But how do you transition from sole psychological ownership for ‘all things business related’ and share ownership across the team?
Take a lesson from David Marquet and learn how to embed the capacity for greatness in the people and practices of an organisation and decouple it from the leader. I share this video with all business owners I come into contact with and I know it will provoke your own thoughts and reflections...
Here are a few prompts to get you started on your journey:
Does the business culture and values foster empowerment and autonomy?
How does your leadership style need to change to support team empowerment?
Are the responsibilities of each role clear?
Do the team have the right level of competence (skills, knowledge, behaviours, etc.) to carry out their role?
Have best practices been agreed and processes documented including RACI (Responsibility, Accountability, Consult, Inform)?
Are the agreed processes being adhered to? If not, why not?
Which decisions and activities can be delegated? What are the risks of delegation and how can they be mitigated?
Which decisions and activities will you keep to protect the business and support the team?
What training and development will be require to increase staff competence and confidence?
How will you personally sustain change and not default back to your 'old ways'?
